Before Dan and I got married we would try different meatloaf recipes in the hopes that we would find the perfect one. We made them with a combination of any of the following ground meats: lean beef, chicken or turkey breast. Most were either too dry, moderately labor intensive or required a lot of ingredients which at the time I didn’t always have (or let’s face it still don’t). We wanted a recipe we could make in a pinch.
Enter Williams-Sonoma’s Classic Meatloaf Starter. The 17 ounce glass jar is not only genius but filled with nutritional goodness, packed with tomatoes, onions, garlic and all of the seasonings one would expect meatloaf to have. According to the package, the only ingredients necessary to have on hand are 2 pounds of ground beef, pork or turkey, 3 eggs and 1 1/4 cups of bread crumbs. Each of the 8 servings in the jar contains only 45 calories and 1 gram of fat per serving. It sounded too good to be true, I needed to try this at home my way.
Making Williams-Sonoma “My Meatloaf” Delicious and Nutritious
I brought a jar of the Williams-Sonoma Meatloaf Starter home and followed the directions but with some sensible substitutions. I combined the starter with three egg equivalents of fat free egg substitute and used one cup of whole wheat bread crumbs instead of 1 ¼ cups of regular (because that is all I had left). Like the directions indicated I let this sit for 15 minutes before adding my meat. I added one pound of 99% fat free ground turkey and one pound of 96% extra lean ground beef. I baked it in a 375°F preheated oven for 40 minutes, spread ketchup on top of the loaf, and proceeded to bake it for 10 additional minutes.
The results were perfection. And it couldn’t have been easier, healthier, leaner and yummier! It passed my and Dan’s standards.
You will always find Williams-Sonoma’s Meatloaf Starter in my pantry, and not just one jar. I always have multiple jars on hand. I have been known to give jars out to friends and they quickly become hooked as well. For a MEAL TRIFECTA the meatloaf would be your protein, I often bake sweet potatoes and steam cauliflower with it for my family’s simple starch and vegetable sides.
Just like the container says, meatloaf is “An American Favorite”. It sure has been my family’s favorite. Check it out at your local Williams-Sonoma store or online at WilliamsSonoma.com; I hope you will find it becomes a favorite of your family’s too.
