When I first started cooking I would get intimidated by any recipe with a long list of ingredients. But, when I stopped to take a longer look at the recipe I found that most of the items listed were herbs and spices. This quelled any initial discomfort I had in the kitchen because I knew I was able to store and use these items easily. A perfect example of this is my Dijon Vinaigrette where eight of the twelve ingredients are spices.
Cooking with spices is an excellent way to add flavor to food without adding extra calories, sodium, fat, cholesterol, or sugar. Every home cook needs a well stocked spice rack. And it isn’t that hard. A well-stocked spice rack is as simple as having a prepared pantry and minimizes the stress when preparing a healthy and delicious meal for yourself and your family — just like having a stocked fridge and freezer does. Below is my list of herbs and spices to have on hand so you are prepared for any recipe at any time.
